Pictured above is a fragment of the genealogical tree of King Christian III of Denmark. From Christian III (1503-59, reigned 1534-59), a branch leads to his father, Frederik I (1471-1533, reigned 1523-33) and from here to Frederik's parents Christian I (1426-81, reigned 1448-1481) and Dorothea of Brandenburg. From here the branches continue, with the result that the top row consists of Christian III's great-great-grandparents. The genealogical trees of Christian and his queen, Dorothea of Lauenburg, were painted on wooden panels now hung at Frederiksborg Castle in Denmark.

We are the children of many sires, and every drop of blood in us in its turn betrays its ancestor.
