Fyodor Dostoevsky imagined Demons as a "novel-pamphlet" in which he would tell all about the scourge of materialist ideology that he perceived spreading his own nation, inspired by the genuine incident of a political murder that terrified Russians in 1869. What resulted was a pre-revolutionary Russian masterwork of ideology and murder that was both prescient and viciously humorous.
